Take Part Highlights New Design Graduate


Digital Media website, Take Part, highlights New Design High School Graduate Juan Nizama:

When Hunter College's spring semester begins on January 28, transfer student Juan Nizama will blend in perfectly with his pre-med peers. The serious and determined young man will be one among many working steadily in pursuit of his dream: becoming a doctor.

His professors and his classmates may never know the full story behind Juan’s shy smile—or why Juan’s quiet presence among them is so remarkable.

JUAN’S STORY

Juan Nizama was born and raised in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. One of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City, Bushwick is known for drugs, crime, violence and urban decay.

As a young boy in elementary and junior-high school, Juan enjoyed being a student and excelled academically. Everything changed once he entered high school.

Like many of his peers, he became disengaged and succumbed to the lure of the streets.
