Cooper Hewitt's Teen Design Fair with Tim Gunn!

Last night, New Design students had the opportunity to attend Cooper Hewitt's Teen Design Fair. In attendance were a wide variety of professional fashion designers, graphic designers, industrial designers, and architects who answered the students' questions and gave them feedback on their portfolios.

The highlight of the evening was the keynote speech by Tim Gunn, Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne and co-host of Bravo's Project Runway. He is pictured above speaking with New Design's Devin, Nora, Juanise, and Amy, giving them feedback on their work and design advice.

THE CONGO PROJECT

Ideas to shed some light on a difficult situation..... New Design students are working to develop lights for IDP camp shelters. These are some of the references we are considering. They include collapsable containers to send, an alternative power source, and a lamp students can draw on.

New Design is partnering with various humanitarian organizations (UNICEF, The More We Share, Community of Unity) on the project. Over two huundred lamps will be donated to raise awareness on the situation and provide some hope for young children.

Summer School: Youth Portraits Showcase

We are currently in the process of completing session 2 of our New Design Summer Institute, a project based credit recovery summer course called Youth Portraits, partnered with our lead cultural partner Urban Arts Partnership (formerly known as Working Playground). This Friday, July 18, 2008, twenty-five of our New Design students will culmintate this intensive literacy course by sharing their work with our communities at large. Students that participated in the Youth Portraits class will share their written autobiographical moment essays, their recorded Youth Portrait and added sound design work as well as their illustrated chap books. Teachers Tracee Worley, Laura Rubin, Theresa Stanley, Ben Rojas and Jesse Pais worked really hard to move this group through an array of autobiographical literature, monologues and theatre pieces, illustration and comic book storyboards all while balancing the teaching, learning, student relationships and fun! Imagine that!

Krush Groove 2008 is a benefit for New Design High School art integration programs. Krush Groove will combine music, art, dance, food and film to create an outdoor community festival on our very own city block rooftop.

The New Design High School (NDHS) is a small academic high school that serves the varied needs of students from all over New York City . Located on the lower east side of Manhattan , NDHS offers students rigorous and literacy-based instruction. Additionally, we utilize the design process to teach creation, revision, and presentation in many areas. Our student-centered model of education supports the intellectual, social, emotional and artistic growth of each student. Through a commitment to the visual and design arts students develop the imaginative, creative and intellectual capacities to question, think deeply, take risks and express their ideas.

Due to city/state-wide budget cuts announced in early February, the school is being forced to discontinue numerous Arts integration programs, which include after school and summer initiatives. Programs that enable us to keep our youth off the streets and more importantly in a creative learning environment.
