College Now Courses - Fall 2011

Fundamentals of Speech SPE 100, 3 credits
The aim of this course is to develop effective skills in speech communication. The student examines how to generate topics and organize ideas, masters elements of audience psychology, and practices techniques of speech presentation in a public forum. All elements of speech production and presentation are considered.

General Psychology PSY 100, 3 credits
This course stresses adaptive human behavior in relation to the environment. Topics considered include: origins and methods of psychology, neuropsychological bases of behavior, maturation, motivation, emotion, learning frustration and conflict.

Introduction to Sociology SOC 100, 3 credits
This course analyzes the structure, processes and products associated with group living. Attention is focused on the concepts of social organization, culture, groups, stratification, major social institutions and significant trends in group living.

Introduction to Video Technology VAT 100, 2 credits
This course explains how video technology works. It covers the fundamentals of contemporary media technology including understanding video image formation, data compression, picture and sound generation and manipulation, and the impact of new technologies, such as HD-TV and P2P. Lab exercises introduce students to the operations of cameras, video-recording systems, microphones, and the uses of SMPTE Time Code. Students also examine systems for delivering media to the viewer, including webcast, broadcast, and satellite and cable distribution.

Introduction to Multimedia MMP 100, 3 credits (2hours 2 lab hours)
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of multimedia production. In a hands-on class, students will learn the essentials of program design and authoring software in an integrated computer environment. Students will learn how to combine graphics, audio and text to create programs for industrial and educational applications.

Introduction to Computer and Information Security CIS 115 (Fridays afternoon only), 3 credits
This course provides an introduction to computer and information security. The significance of information integrity, availability and confidentiality are presented to demonstrate the importance of computer and information security. Students will gain practical skills on how to recognize threats and correct vulnerabilities. Techniques of detection, prevention and recovery from intrusions by malicious software will be taught with emphasis on concepts of organizational security through the institution of policies and procedures, and establishment of business and continuity planning.

Accounting Principles I ACC 122, 4 Credits
The course covers the fundamental principles of accounting and the practical use of accounting tools and techniques. Topics covered include the definition and scope of accounting, accounting records and processes, books of original and subsequent entry, work sheets, adjusting and closing entries, accounting for cash, accounting for negotiable instruments, and accounting for plant assets. An investigation is made of accounting for service businesses and trading concerns.

Introduction to Business BUS 104, 3 credits
Business and industry in the United States are surveyed broadly in this course. Emphasis is placed on the historical development, objectives, methods of operation, and the interrelationships of management, labor and government. Included is the study of new developments and trends in business administration and the problems they engender in the total management process.

Elements of Engineering Design ESC 111, 1 credit
This course provides an introduction to engineering practice through hands-on investigations, computer applications, and design projects in the fields of structures and robotics. All investigations and design projects are performed in groups and presented in oral and /or written form. Computers are used for documentation, data analysis and robot control.

General Chemistry CHE 110, 4 Credits
This course is designed specifically for the non-science major and should only be taken by students in non-science disciplines: liberal arts, business, etc. It explores the world of atoms and molecules and relates this submicroscope world to the daily life of the student. Topics to be discussed include plastics, foods, the environment, genetics and drugs.

Prom Day Attendance: June 8, 2011

This years prom will be held at the New Yorker Hotel on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 from 8:00pm - 12:00am.

Here is a reminder about PROM attendance:

*Students must be on time to DFL

*Students must be in attendance at least half the day in order to sign out early.

*Most students that want to sign out at lunch must be present to DFL and the first 3 blocks of the day.

*Students that come late to school will have to stay the second half of the afternoon.

Please be advised that if you are ABSENT from school on the day of the prom please make sure you know you will loose your privileged to attend the prom. *No refunds.*

There is NO SCHOOL the day after prom on Thursday, June 9, 2011.

Master Poet Poetry Slam

Just before spring break the NDHS community gathered after school for a Poetry Slam & Open Mic organized by UAP teaching artist Fabian Saucedo. At the event NDHS student poets, MCs and musicians shared some amazing work with their peers and teachers. 12th grade student and Master Poet participant Yolandri Vargas won the slam with her piece titled, "This Poem Is Not About Me." 9th grade student Victoria Ruiz and 12th grade student Charles Prophet placed in second and third.

A Minute With Sammy, New Design High School - iDesign 2014 from Urban Arts Partnership on Vimeo.

Spend "A Minute With" New Design High School Freshman, Samuel Fermin. Sammy is enrolled in the iDesign program, an Attendance Improvement/Drop-Out Prevention initiative offered by Urban Arts Partnership in partnership with New Design and funded through a grant with the United Way. Coordinators Ariana Allensworth and Sarah Gluck work one-on-one and in groups with iDesign students to monitor their attendance, encourage their academics, and offer support in innumerable ways. Afterschool arts programs, including photography and poetry, play a large role in the program. Through these art forms, the students explore and share their individual viewpoints, increasing their ownership of their own education. In this "A Minute With," Sammy explains how iDesign is keeping him on track to graduate and empowering him to "design" his own life.

**Seniors will not be allowed to attend until they have completed the mandatory bag check, have turned in all medical release documents and paid off or turned in library books!

FIRST YEAR SPIRIT ANIMAL MASKS

Healthy 12th Grade YELC Girls

During the first week of February our 12th grade female Youth Empowerment Leadership Community (YELC) participated in the 2nd Annual Health & Wellness Intersession program. YELC is part of the leadership intern program with our friends at Community of Unity.

This year’s YELC program was called, “Feeding your Mind, Body, and Soul.” and was a celebratory three days away from school, honoring our Young Women in their final year of High School. Each day was filled with learning, personal challenges, and so much laughter. The amazing program included juice and raw food tastings at Organic Avenue, a visit to Georgia Salon for an inter-generational conversation on beauty, hair, and self-care, and a soulful day of healthy cooking and group reflection.

“What really interested me was our day focused on the Body,” writes YELC member Juanise Allen. “We spent the beginning of each day at Organic Avenue, where we talked about the importance of what goes into our body. We tasted juices that Organic Avenue offered (Grapefruit & Vegetable juice). Immediately, my body reacted and I felt completely refreshed. Having this experience really influenced me to be more cautious of what goes into my body.”

This program was another milestone in our on-going commitment to providing opportunities for our youth to explore and embrace their own health and wellness, and to make good choices that will empower them to follow their dreams and live their Song.

Special thanks to our generous partners at Georgia Salon & Organic Avenue for hosting the girls and making everything so special and so real. Additional thanks to the CofU Board of Directors , Jason & Marisa Zullin, and Audrey Orell for so generously opening her home to us once again!

New Design is Big in Japan (We Think)

Japanese Kensetsu Architecture, Construction and Engineering News Daily highlights New Design. We are not sure what they are saying but we think they are highlighting the work we do with the Center for Architecture Foundation and their Learning By Design Program. Each year the Design Department at New Design partners with the Learning By Design program to work on large build projects on the roof of the school. The idea is to use architecture as a vehicle for fostering learning and discovery to inspire creative thinking and problem-solving.

Take Part Highlights New Design Graduate

When Hunter College's spring semester begins on January 28, transfer student Juan Nizama will blend in perfectly with his pre-med peers. The serious and determined young man will be one among many working steadily in pursuit of his dream: becoming a doctor.

His professors and his classmates may never know the full story behind Juan’s shy smile—or why Juan’s quiet presence among them is so remarkable.

JUAN’S STORY

Juan Nizama was born and raised in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. One of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City, Bushwick is known for drugs, crime, violence and urban decay.

As a young boy in elementary and junior-high school, Juan enjoyed being a student and excelled academically. Everything changed once he entered high school.

Like many of his peers, he became disengaged and succumbed to the lure of the streets.

Fashion Week

The New York City Department of Education (DOE), the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week producer IMG Fashion, and Lincoln Center today welcomed some of our New Design High School students, and fashion teacher extraordinaire Julie Zenobi, who are interested in entering the fashion industry to hear from top designers and industry leaders at the second annual Life in Fashion Forum. Panel members included Patrick Robinson, Executive Vice President of Global Design for the Gap; Lubov Azria, Chief Creative Officer of BCBG Max Azria Group; Lori Goldstein, Stylist; and Terron Schaefer, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer for Saks Fifth Avenue. The event was held at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center and moderated by Teri Agins, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal and author of “The End of Fashion.”

New Design Hits the Airwaves

Coming this Spring to NBC is the new show Cause Celeb. The show, hosted by Cat Greenleaf, introduces viewers to celebrities who give back to causes. Each week the show will accompany a different celeb on a trip through their past to explore the issues that have shaped them, and watch as they partner with charitable groups to make a difference. The first show documents Rosie Perez and the work she does as head of the Artistic Board of Urban Arts Partnership. The show with Rosie highlights New Design and the challenge faced two Seniors, Tamika Cruz and Michael Dela Cruz to pass the New York State Regents Exam using the UAP's Fresh Prep that has been developed and piloted in partnership with New Design High School. New Design is using the Fresh Prep program for the Regents in United States History, Global History, English and Math. Check out more about Fresh Prep.

SOUND DESIGN at NEW DESIGN

The 9th Grade have been working on Sound Design producing original songs in their Music Production course. The class is part of the Urban Arts Partnership program at the school and taught by teaching artist, Jules Gimbrone. Meeting once a week over the course of the semester, students gained the skills to produce, edit, and mix their own songs using the program Garageband. Simultaneously, students investigated themes of identity, and wrote poetry that explores the effects of stereotypes. Students then recorded and mixed their poems into their instrumental tracks.
