Day 1 Intersession

"Love's Not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks. Within his bending sickle's compass come." Senior Amanda Bermudez performs Shakesphere's Sonnet 116 on the F Train coming back from a visit to New York University to see a rehearsal of a play. Amanda and 12 other students are in the 24 Hour Play Intersession. In the course, in a 24 hour period, students write, direct and perform an original play. Do the Right Thing actress Rosie Perez and Michael K. Willimas, Omar from the Wire, are directing the plays. Intersession is a three day course between the semesters that let students get an more in-depth learning experience.

THE NDHS MAC ARTHUR GRANT PROPOSAL

In 2007 the Cooper-Hewitt launched the exhibition DESIGN FOR THE OTHER 90%. The show highlights industrial designers using their craft to address the basic challenges of survival in underserved populations. One example is the LIFESTRAW, which prevents disease by purifying drinking water.

Inspired by the exhibition, NDHS is designing a class around this problem solving ideology. By looking globally and then designing locally, students will solve pressing NYC issues.

Students will watch the film GARBAGE DREAMS. The film follows three teenage boys born into the trash-trade on the outskirts of Cairo. Students will then conduct research into the local equivalent of the issue. Designing products that solve a problem, the effort will form a larger campaign called NEW DESIGN for NEW YORK.

BUT HOW DOES IT BECOME A CAUSE?
By looking at awareness campaigns such as PRODUCT RED, students will see the social nature of entrepreneurship. To push the promotional side of design, students will evaluate products on the Discovery Channel’s PITCHMEN with the late Billy Mays.

GETTING IDEAS OUT IN THE WORLD
With their product and pitch in place, students will create infomercials to be aired on a MobileMe website through You-Tube. From the site students can recruit followers of their product on TWITTER and people can join the NEW DESIGN for NEW YORK cause on Facebook.

With a bona-fide fan base, students will mimic research and development prototype evaluation. SURVEY MONKEY and online testimonials using SKYPE will provide this data. Finally students will present their designs to INVENT NOW!

REAL PEOPLE, REAL PRODUCTS, REAL FUTURES
This class teaches engineering and entrepreneurship through industrial design. Students will make a field trip to see the Textile Engineering Program at Philadelphia University and Penn’s Weiss Tech House.

Class of 2010! Smile!

Google Mural

Goolge asked New Design if we could design and paint a mural for their New York City offices in the Chelsea Market. Design teacher Ben Rojas and 12th graders Mario, Dilyon and Dennis took on the task and completed this mural. The boys have been working with Ben for the last three years on their mural skills.

12th Grade Student Claribel Santiago, directly to the left, with Secretary of State Madeline Albright. 12th grade New Design students visited the Museum of Art and Design to hear Ms. Albright speak as part of the museum's exhibition of pins that the the former Secretary of State use to wear for her work as the Madame Secretary and as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. New Design students are currently researching issues of gendercide in Scott's 12th Grade Design Class and design solutions for "the other 90%" of the world's peoples in Corey's class.

24 Hours Plays

New Design High School sophomore Sydney White performed her original poem "I Pity the Silent," at 24 Plays on Broadway to a packed house on November 9th at American Airlines Theater. 24 Hours Plays is an annual event that calls for creative types to write, direct and perform six original short plays in just under a day. The event, sponsored by Montblanc, is a benefit for New Design High School's main cultural partner Urban Arts Partnership. Performing this evening along with Sydney were Anthony Mackie, Ashton Kutcher, Billy Crudup , David Cross, Demi Moore, Diane Neal, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Esposito, Julia Stiles, Liev Schreiber, Michael Ealy, Rachel Dratch, Rosario Dawson and Rosie Perez. Sydney rocked the house and one of the above celebs teared when she heard her the poem.

Fresh Prep

The Robin Hood foundation has awarded Urban Arts Partnership a grant for our year-round Fresh Prep program at New Design High School. Fresh Prep is an arts-based approach to raising student achievement on the Global History and Geography Regents exam, fusing hip-hop music with the New York State core curriculum. Drawing from current research and best practices in student engagement, vocabulary development and verbal memory, the curriculum features vocabulary-building, multiple-choice strategies, and essay-writing units designed for students to take ownership of their own learning while creating original, curriculum-based artwork.

Urban Arts Partnership and New Design High School are the first arts organizations to be awarded funding by Robin Hood, a competitive foundation known for funding programs with proven methods for breaking the cycle of poverty. Urban Arts Partnership is implementing the Fresh Prep: Global History classroom integration for 150 students at New Design High School this year and developing curricula for Fresh Prep in English, U.S. History, Living Environment and Mathematics.

Urban Arts Partnership is the first arts organization to be awarded funding by Robin Hood, a competitive foundation known for funding programs with proven methods for breaking the cycle of poverty. Urban Arts Partnership is implementing the Fresh Prep: Global History classroom integration for 150 students at New Design High School this year and developing curricula for Fresh Prep in English, U.S. History, Living Environment and Mathematics.

Kiva Kookie Assembly Line

The year 4 design students are opening their own cookie companies. The proceeds will go to benefit entrepreneurs in third world countries through KIVA. We have been studying assembly lines and efficiency. This is our most efficient assembly line; creating nine bags of cookie dough in twenty five minutes. This will make 108 cookies for us to package and sell. In the end of the video students switch to their label creation assembly lines.
